February’s monthly meeting was a unique event held in conjunction with the Better Buildings by Design Conference. We utilized our yearly Distinguished Lecturer allocation for a resident expert on indoor air quality, Hoy Bohanon. Hoy has written technical papers and articles on indoor air quality, operations, and maintenance and is a frequent presenter at technical society meetings. He is chair of the ASHRAE Standard 62.1 committee and co-author of The Indoor Air Quality Best Practices Guide. He also teaches multiple courses for the ASHRAE Learning Institute addressing ASHRAE 62.1 and IAQ.
We were lucky enough to have Mr. Bohanon present two separate sessions at the conference. The first was ‘How to Implement Demand Control Ventilation and Comply with ASHRAE Standards’. We had about 60 attendees and many found the information useful in clarifying the many ways to vary ventilation rates as allowed in 62.1. Where demand control ventilation is required CO2 does not have to be the control, occupancy sensors will suffice and can be a simpler design. Some attendees asked for the slides that Hoy presented to reference on their future designs.

The second presentation was ‘Commissioning, Operating and Maintaining Air-to-Air Energy Recovery Systems’. There were about 45 attendees who learned about the different types of ERV systems and where they are most useful. To fully commission an energy recovery system would require nearly a dozen sensors including temperature, flow and humidity. The process is time consuming and likely only worthwhile only for the larger systems.
